About LEVS - Types of Events

The Viking Ship Norseman is a 40-foot, half-sized working model patterned after the Gokstad Viking Ship (on display in Oslo, Norway), according to the manufacturer who built our hull, Applecraft Ltd. of the Isle of Man, U.K. Our volunteer crewmembers have outfitted her so that she is a good, accurate representative of ships of the Viking era. She is kept on a custom built trailer and can be taken many places that a full sized Viking Ship could not.

The Leif Ericson Viking Ship organization has three types of events: Traveling Vikings, Dry-land Exhibits, and Water Excursions. Below are more detailed descriptions of each event.

Traveling Vikings
One or two Vikings will come to your indoor or outdoor location and talk about the history and culture of the Vikings. Depending upon who volunteers to do the event, they will come with various "artifacts" that will help augment their talk, such as tools, clothing, weapons, etc. Theese volunteers will also be open to a question and answer session. Examples of this type of event are: visits to schools and clubs.

Dry-land Exhibits
LEVS will trailer the Norseman to your outdoor location, as well as have crewmembers available for education and discussion. The boat will be displayed with the sail up (weather permitting) while on the trailer. Crewmembers will be available to the public for discussion about the Viking culture. The Norseman is generally not available during the months of December through late March, due to weather and repair requirements. Examples of this type of event are: outdoor visits to schools and festivals.

Water Excursions
LEVS will trailer the Norseman to your water location, and then sail (weather permitting) the ship to a spot to anchor the ship. Crewmembers will be available to the public for discussion about the Viking culture. Depending on the occasion and accessibility, visitors will be able to take a brief ride on the ship. The sailing season runs from May through early October. Examples of this type of event are: Leif Ericson Day in Philadelphia, PA and our trips to Russia, Newfoundland, New York City, Jamestown, NY and Asheville, OH.

We are a non-profit 501(c)3 educational group, however we do need to collect an appearance fee in order to offset our overhead costs. This fee does not include travel expenses such as turnpike and bridge tolls, overnight stays, meals for our crews, in-water costs or other unusual circumstances.
